The Audiovisual Media Culture program at the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Lapland wishes to share Spatial Media Workshop (5 cr.) with the dance, music and media students of the Dama -network institutions. This 8th Dama -workshop takes new challenges: creating a performative instances, installations, or interactive events to Rovaniemi Design Week opening event / Faculty of the Arts spectacle, which will happen outdoors in the city centre. The course contains an short preparation task, a ten-day intensive part in Rovaniemi, Lapland, during which a final work is completed in a group and final feedback phase.


The workshop is intended for students of time-based art: dance, multimedia, music, video, etc. The goal is to provide a platform for students of different disciplines, backgrounds, nationalities, and languages to work together using their domain-specific skills in a multimedia environment.

Goal
This course focuses on creating small events / presentations / installations to cold, wintery outdoor environment. The final works combine movement and media – these can be executed performers, audience, interaction with snow, ice and media or something which combines all this. In addition students learn to work in a multidisciplinary and international team. The students work together in groups, creating an installation, performance or interactive experience as the final work.


Content and methods
Creating performative things for winter outdoor events. How to use interaction and technology in the cold climate. Relationships of media, movement and space are discussed. Small exercises and theory lessons guide the creation of the final work.


Pre-assessment
Document an example of interesting winter art with either a) performative or b) new media related things (or both) (pdf, powerpoint or similar). Presented in the beginning of the workshop.


Grading:  1-5 / fail (or based on the home institutions grade system)

Selection criteria:

  1. Background knowledge in dance and / or media

  2. Interest in cross-disciplinary work

  3. Ability to work in a collaborative and international group

  4. Intermediate / advanced level in own field of study

  5. Dance students: Some skills in new media tools and technologies are beneficial.

  6. Media, art & music students: Interest in dance, movement and spatiality are beneficial

Accommodation
Visiting students will book their accommodation themselves.


Please bring with you
Bed linen or a sleeping bag & towel & personal toiletries
If possible, a laptop computer and audiovisual equipment (digital camera, video camera, sound recording equipment, sensors, etc.)

Costs
The students will get a mobility stipend, amount depends on which country the student is coming from. The travel and accommodation are then covered by the students themselves with the money. Participants have to be prepared to pay for meals or cook on their own.
