Expressive Gestures and Motion Capture Technology  (3,5 ECTS)

June 10-14, 2019

Course content

The workshop will focus on explorations of human emotional expressions during dance and performance via recordings of body movement in Motion capture (Mocap) studio. In filmmaking and video game development, motion capture refers to recording actions of human actors, and using that information to animate digital character models in 2D or 3D computer animation. During the workshop we will explore use of mo-cap data and the technology behind it in context of game characters and game making.

The course is designed in three steps:

1. Preparatory assignment in the form of a brief presentation of Mocap technology in relation to the

Knowledge areas the students come from. The main idea of this assignment is a presentation during the first day of the workshop where students reflect over the Mocap technology in context of they own study area. This in form of references to existing work that mix mo-cap technology with dance, art or games depending which area the participant come from.

2. Workshop and theory.

During the first day students will be presented to concepts of game, character and cinematics. The main workshop in Mocap studio is based on teamwork where students will in teams create a game synopsis based on the characters' emotional expressions that will be recorded and digitalized. This part focuses on to learn the Motion capture system, practice movements in the Mocap studio, shooting movements and analyzing the results.

3. The finale part of the workshop is based on networking in a group for summary documentation and evaluation.
