100 video art works

I will be making and publishing online 100 video art works, most of them in 2017. Some of them also work as interactive installations, and some of them will be planned to fit certain locations, spaces, structures and surfaces.

Videos will be published here, patience.

016/100 My Gay Nightingale Tweets in Arabic

Visualization of bird song, which at first looked like Arabic. Then I made a few changes and it became a tweeting bird, then a pride-colored call for liberty and justice and peace and equality. The interactive version can visualize any sound input coming in. The nightingale sound is a 1978 recording from Ylearkisto, Downloadable from Freesound.org. The work is inspired by a piece I saw many years ago which turned bird sounds in to various characters (although for my work the bird sound was more of an accident). I don't think it did it real time though.

Continuing with text and typography, this one goes down to the basics. 023/100 Number series #1

Here is the first such video. 100 Random numbers between 0 and 100 visualized, animated and spoken in 10 different languages. Thanks Satu, Aurelie, Markus, Paulina, Alva, Ting-Ting, Magnus, Federica, Kyoko and Milena! Also owes a bit to my mobile phone flowers project from 2008.

Many of them were kindly turned in to transparent png's by Scott Draves, and released under cc-by-sa-1.0 license. You can check them out here. 033/100 Things That I Need

For this I played around with the visual side first, sort of revisiting my Collagerator from 2000. So I made the visual side, then music, then came up with the title, but it seemed unfinished. So The title led to the spoken track (Thanks Heather, who is such a NaturalReader and never tires and Teufelsberg Reverb, which I've used probably in 10 of these already), and then it was done. Hmmm... whatever happened to #32? Well, I'll get to it.

034/100 Alphabet series #1

Epilepsy warning! This one is more or less a copy of an earlier (but unpublished?) work. I noticed that when you have a fast enough framerate and cut down the image (in the early case and this case with letters of the alphabet), the eye starts to see many images. I replaced the texture images from the earlier work with solid colors, and the effect is clearly visible: at peak points one thinks there are 3-4 colors, but if you pause the film at any point, there is only one color + black. Then I had the ever so faithful Satu and Alva speak out the letters, with some reverb and echo.

035/100 Nyt Hyppäämme uuteen asiaan

Fourth video for the Oi Maamme! project, with media material package dealing with work. I decided to use speech samples from the videos in a random setting, and juxtapose them with random parts from the videos. Some color tuning and a moombahton rhythm I composed finishes the job. This works best as an eternal loop in an installation setting. Heavily based on my Putsch '79: Asian Girls music video.

049/100 Psychoanalysis

Yet another neural network / computer ai -project. There are quite a few algorithms out there which analyse content of images. I thought it would be interesting to see how well it behaves on movie still images. And of course Psycho + analysis = psychoanalysis. The film has been analysed in many ways before, but as far as I know not with a computer vision algorithm before. The length of this video is based on the duration of a psychoanalysis session: 1 hour. The 600 movie frames are not always visually the most exiting, and it seems the algorithms are trained with pictures which don't always give accurate results — perhaps it's the 60's hairdos or the fashion... But I guess it is fun when the computer makes mistakes (as it also does when certain questions the psychoanalyst Ava poses are not grammatically correct). Or perhaps there are subconscious messages in the film, which the computer sees? The repetitive questions and the questions which hit the nail take the work to another level and make it mesmerizing to watch. I think this is a media art classic. Has there been trouble with a man wearing a tie?

050/100 16 Times Relax

This was a quick project done for an art exhibition, which had to be done in less than a week since there was a cancellation. The topic turned out to be Softness an everything related to meditation, and relaxation etc. And since it is art, of course the take is if not critical then at least hoping to make you ponder some questions. The most obvious question is: who well do you relax when you watch 16 relaxation / meditataion videos at once? Do you relax 16 times better and faster? The duration is a bit long, it goes from less hectic to hectic in 10 minutes and back. Oh well, compared to some of the meditation videos used as source material (some of them are 10 hours) this is very short.

051/100 World's smallest gif animation

I heard about some people making the worlds longest / largest / biggest gif animation. So I decided to create the smallest. Perhaps it has been done before, but at least I couldn't find it. So one pixel size, one frame is black, one white, one second each. So of course this time the thumbnail is much larger than the animation. The file size probably could be shrank (it is now 345 bytes) to be even smaller, but visually this is about it.

054/100 Käsitys Lapista

Seventh Oi maamme! -video. This time something a bit different: projections of old Lapland travel films on my hands. Lapland has always been seen as a sort of a fantasyland, where you can leave your worries behind. On the other hand, this playground for people from the southern parts of Finlad means often that they come here to booze their brains off. I hope the narration tells about both these phenomena.

058/100 Terveisiä kuuhun

This is a screen + audio recording of my interactive installation. The installation consists of six light sensors, and is triggered with flashlights in this case. A small documentation of the actual performance can be found in Flickr. The version in Youtube has quite a drastic offsync between the image and the sound, but I won't be changing that. The text layer is derived live from a twitter bot @apollo11junk, the classic moonflight eternally orbiting in space.

059/100 Manuscript

I wanted to figure out how to do 3D depth mapping, and realized that I could use a black and white version of live video image as a depth map for the vary same video image. It turned out to be visually interesting, although quite disturbing. So this works in real time as an installation as well (even the sound is mapped to midi by using brightness values of certain areas of the image, and the main average of the image, here in three layers plus the speech.) With some additional effects it is possible to build lego-brick like, hexagonal, or kaleidoscopic landscapes based on the video image brightness… let's see if those experiments end up as video works.

060/100 Plastissi

50's beauty tips meet decaying statues. A sister work for 032 (the text spoken by Satu is from the same book as those in that video). This piece is more or less a custom work done for the University of Lapland staff exhibition Kuollutta lihaa (Dead meat). This is the second video here done with the Primitive software (I publsihed 063 already earlier). This time I added some code of my own to produce 100 random versions (each are built up with a random number of rectangles from 50 to 400) out of each photograph, and yet more code to randomly loop through the images - realising in the end that maybe 20 or so random variations would have been enough. Nevertheless, I think it came out fine, and the conflict in the text and the images is intriguing Also an interesting observation: it is easier to make out the details of the images from a further distance, but also without my glasses I can see the original images much more clearly than with glasses.

063/100 Primitive jungle

A car drive through an overgrown cottage-road - we got lost during the summer. This was filmed on the way back - we had to drive the road all the way and turn and drive back, the road was too narrow to turn or to back up. I didn't know what to do with the video, but last week or so I've been interested in the software Primitive which converts images to primitive shapes. The software is made by Michael Fogleman and released under MIT license. One or two more primitive-based works are in progress as well...

066/100 SF

I found this footage from Lombard street from my hard disk and decided to do something with it. Pretty soon I was thinking of using the building facades as surfaces for pseudo projections. For the faces I used Stylegan2 created images from thispersondoesnotexist.com by philwang@umich.edu. Then I decided to test out animated masks. It turned out to be very heavy to composite 10 full HD layers of live video in TouchDesigner. This one took one hour to render. Not really real-time stuff on a laptop. Man, I miss Quartz Composer :( Also I'm not super happy about the way the faces are multiplied with the surfaces, something with the colors which is just not right. But I think there is a lot of nice small details which keeps you entertained. At least the cars and people in Lombard street.

067/100 RorschAIch

A sister video for 019, 068 and perhaps 011 - I forgot that I used this soundtrack already :) This is a so called Lantent walk out of the StyleGAN2 generated model of an AI which has tried to learn to hallucinate abstract art. As far as I understand, the GAN creates a 512-dimensional space for potential abstract art images, and the walk happens from one position to another, every step being a potential image in between. This model was created by using 200 images only, ans trained for 3000kimg (3 million images).

Interesting thing about generative ai is that you really don't know the outcome, at least during the early phases of the training process.
